NIN - Closer

"Closer" is perhaps Nine Inch Nails' most well-known song. The song's chorus includes the famous line "I want to fuck you like an animal," requiring the profanity to be censored for radio play despite its prominent placement in the song.
"Closer" has been covered by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine, The Galan Pixs, Eric Gorfain, Maroon 5, Maxwell, Nine Inch Richards, Frank Rogala, Rosetta Stone, Ark Sano, S.I.N.A., Spiralmouth and Transient. "Weird Al" Yankovic included a polka version of the song in "Alternative Polka" from his album Bad Hair Day.
An edit of the remix "Closer (precursor)" is present in the opening credits of the movie Se7en.

The music video was directed by Mark Romanek and first aired on May 12, 1994. The video was popular and helped bolster the success of the band. It was also somewhat controversial due to its imagery which included a nude woman with a crucifix mask, a monkey tied to a cross, and diagrams of vulvas. Many think these images were inspired by the art of Joel-Peter Witkin. Scenes that had to be removed were replaced with a title card that said "Scene Missing" (this was done to make sure the flow of the song was not affected). The video also has a stylized, old-film look. The video is one of two directed by Romanek that the Museum of Modern Art has added to its permanent collection.

In mid-2002, the full-on unedited version of this video was aired on MTV2 as part of a special countdown showing the most controversial videos ever to air on MTV. This countdown was only shown late at night because of the graphic imagery of "Closer" and several other videos on the countdown.

Belouis Some - Imagination

Belouis Some (born Neville Keighley, 12 December 1959), is a British new wave musician. He had a few minor hits in the 1980s with "Some People", "Round and Round", (which appeared on the soundtrack album to the film Pretty in Pink), plus "Imagination", which reached #17 on the UK Singles Chart

After the video of this song was played on the Max Headroom Show, complaints to the ITCC brought about a serious change in viewing styles on UK television

Duran Duran - Girls on Film

The song fared well on the radio and the charts before the notoriously titillating video was filmed, but the controversy that ensued helped to keep the band in the public eye and the song on the charts for many weeks.

The video (featuring topless women mud wrestling and other not-very-stylised depictions of sexual fetishes) was made with directing duo Godley & Creme, and was filmed in August just two weeks after MTV was launched in the United States, before anyone knew what an impact the music channel would have on the industry. The band expected the "Girls On Film" video to be played in the newer nightclubs that had video screens, or on pay-TV channels like the Playboy Channel. The raunchy video created an uproar, and it was consequently banned by the BBC and heavily edited for MTV. The band unabashedly enjoyed and capitalized on the controversy.

A Video 45 with videos for "Girls on Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" was released in the United States in March, 1983 (The VHS-format tape contains MTV-friendly "day version" of "Girls on Film", while the Beta format contains the uncensored "night version"). The Video 45 won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 1984, the first year the Academy gave that award.

The uncensored video was also included in the Duran Duran video album (1983) and the Greatest video collection (released on VHS in 1999, and on DVD in 2004).

Soft Cell - Sex Dwarf

Their first album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, further explored the trademark Soft Cell themes of squalor and sleaze. "Seedy Films" talks of long nights in porno cinemas, while "Frustration" and "Secret Life" deal with the boredom and hypocrisy associated with suburban life. A companion video entitled Non-Stop Exotic Video Show was released alongside the album and featured videos directed by Tim Pope, who later found fame as director of music videos by The Cure. The video generated some controversy in Britain, mainly due to the scandal involved with the "Sex Dwarf" promotional film. The original version of the music video featured Almond and Ball in a bloody butcher shop surrounded by chainsaws, nude actors, and dwarves. However, the film was confiscated by police and censored before it was even released. As a tongue-in-cheek substitute, a re-filmed "Sex Dwarf" appeared in Non-Stop Exotic Video Show featuring Almond dressed in a tuxedo, directing a symphony orchestra of dwarves.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax

"Relax" was initially a fairly unregarded single on the fledgling ZTT label, troubling the lower reaches of the UK Top 50 throughout the latter end of 1983. However, it crucially proved to have somewhat unique staying power, never dropping more than a couple of chart places one week before leaping forward ten places the next. In the absence at this stage of any discernible marketing hyperbole, the record appeared to make its way entirely upon its own merits into the lower reaches of the Top Forty by January 1984.

At this point, several events seem to have conspired simultaneously to help propel "Relax" to notoriety:

* "Relax" was at number 35 in the first UK charts of 1984.
* On Thursday January 5, Frankie Goes To Hollywood performed "Relax" on the BBC flagship TV chart show, Top Of The Pops.
* By January 10, "Relax" had risen to number 6 in the UK singles chart.
* On Wednesday January 11 1984, it is believed that Radio 1 disc jockey Mike Read publicly expressed his distaste for both the record's suggestive sleeve (designed by Yvonne Gilbert) and its evocative lyrics as expressed thereon, and he immediately flexed his radio muscles in effecting a very public, albeit rather personal, ban on the single.

The record sleeve, of course, did advise:

"Relax, don't do it, when you want to suck it to it, Relax don't do it, when you want to come."

* Belatedly backing up their key - if somewhat easily flustered - breakfast DJ, BBC Radio had instigated a complete and utter corporation ban on the single a reported two days later (although certain prominent night-time BBC shows - including those of Kid Jensen and John Peel - would continue to play the record, as they saw fit, throughout 1984).[2]
* The now-banned "Relax" was number 2 behind "Pipes of Peace" in the charts by 17 January.
* "Relax" hit the number one spot on 24 January - during which time, the BBC Radio ban had extended to Top of the Pops as well, which was reduced to showing a still picture of the group during their climactic Number One announcement, before airing a performance by a distinctly non-Number One artiste.

This went on for the five weeks that "Relax" was at number one. The single remained on the charts for a record consecutive forty-two weeks. It would rise up from a declining chart position to number two during the UK summer of 1984 whilst Frankie's follow-up single "Two Tribes" held the UK number one spot.

The ban became an embarrassment for the BBC, especially given that UK commercial radio stations were still playing the song. Later in 1984 the ban was lifted and "Relax" featured on both the Christmas Day edition of Top of the Pops and Radio 1's rundown of the best-selling singles of the year.

Add N to (X) - Plug Me In

Add N to (X) were a three-piece British band specializing in electronic music performed on analogue synthesizers, formed in London in 1994.

The band's members were Barry Smith, Ann Shenton and Steven Claydon.

After several releases on small labels, they turned down offers from major labels and signed to large independent label Mute Records in 1998, and achieved a modest commercial success before splitting in 2003.

Robbie Williams - Rock DJ

The video's ending (beginning with Williams taking off his skin) was cut by most music channels around Europe, including VIVA, MCM and MTV. VH1 Europe decided to use its own video for the song, created from recording studio footage. An example of a TV station that still plays the full video is Bulgarian channel

Minimoni

The group was founded in late 2000 by Morning Musume member Mari Yaguchi, who had an idea for a subgroup whose members were 150 cm (5ft) in height or shorter. Yaguchi, and Morning Musume's songwriter and producer Tsunku, selected two of Morning Musume's newest members, Ai Kago and Nozomi Tsuji, for the new subgroup, and the trio began performing in concerts as Mini Moni. American-born Mika Todd of Coconuts Musume was later added into the group to give the group "an international flavor", and Tsunku made them official. Their debut single, "Minimoni Jankenpyon!", was a #1 hit.

Sugarcubes - Hit

The Sugarcubes (Icelandic: Sykurmolarnir) were an Icelandic alternative rock band formed in 1986 and disbanded in 1992. They received critical and popular acclaim internationally. The band's sound was characterized by whimsical yet heartfelt lyrics, and the imploring, girlish voice of vocalist Björk Guðmundsdóttir, who later went on to great success as a solo artist.

On September 18, 2006, the band announced plans for a one-off reunion concert on November 17 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut single with all profits going to the non-profit Smekkleysa SM to promote Icelandic music.

PIXIES - Debaser

As "Velouria" (their first single from Bossanova) was climbing up the UK Top 40, the band was offered a spot on Top Of The Pops. However, a BBC rule stated that only singles with videos could be performed on the show. To counter this (and the fact that some were criticising the single because it did not have a video), the band was filmed running down a Manchester quarry on a shoestring budget.

In the video, ten seconds of footage (the time needed for the band members to reach the camera) is slowed in order to last for the duration of the song. However, the effort in filming the video was in vain; the Pixies did not play "Velouria" on Top of The Pops while the single was in the charts. In fact, the band never appeared on the show.

Anthrax - Got The Time

Anthrax is a New York City-based thrash metal band, who released their first full-length album in 1984. Anthrax was one of the most popular bands of the 1980s thrash metal scene and are notable for combining metal with rap, hardcore, and alternative music early on. They are generally classified as one of the "big four" of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth.

They have made several appearances on television including: Married... with Children, WWE RAW, and NewsRadio. The band has also appeared in movies such as Run Ronnie Run (performing as the fictional band Titannica) and Calendar Girls. Their song "Madhouse" was used in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in-game radio station V-Rock. In 2006, guitarist Scott Ian was a cast member of VH1's reality show SuperGroup.

Samantha Fox - Let Me Be Free

Fox was twice linked to Australian Peter Foster. They dated in 1986-87 and then, after a seven year separation, they reunited in 1994 for a year. They were at one time reportedly engaged to be married. Fox described Foster as "the love of my life". She has also been in relationships with Paul Stanley, the singer and rhythm guitarist for the band KISS.

In 1994, it was reported that she had become a born-again Christian and she was invited to play at Christian music festival Greenbelt. When queried about how she could reconcile topless modelling with her Christian beliefs, she said:

"Easily. God gave me my body. I know it has made many people happy. There is no conflict there. I don't and have never promoted pornography. I'm not a born-again Christian because I have always been one. I am doing what God wants me to do. My prayer each night is: "Let me go my way and make people happy. Let me do the right thing."

Rumours regarding Fox's sexual preference began to surface in 1999 when she judged a lesbian beauty pageant, and many people said they believed that the woman she lived with at the time, Australian Cris Bonacci, was more than just her manager. In February 2003, she finally revealed the truth:

But I can't keep saying, "Maybe", or denying it. It's time to let people know where my heart is. People keep trying to say I'm a lesbian. I don't know what I am. All I know is that I'm in love with Myra [Stratton, her manager]. I love her completely and want to spend the rest of my life with her.

* Danny Carey from Tool was a member of Green Jellÿ for five years, and played drums on the album Cereal Killer. He is also featured in the video for "Electric Harley House (Of Love)", among others.

* Maynard James Keenan, vocalist for Tool, was also once a "member" of Green Jellÿ. On the song Three Little Pigs Maynard sang backing vocals (he sings the falsetto "Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin.") Maynard is also mentioned in the song "Green Jello Sucks" in the lyric "Maynard, and Poopie - they're both insane!"

* The song "Message To Harry Manback" on Tool's Ænima album was a real message left on Gary Helsinger's (Hotsy Menshot) answering machine by a friend of a friend from Italy who was stealing his roommate's belongings. "Harry Manback" is a reference to Gary Helsingers more-than-ample back hair. Bill and Gary were once roommates with Maynard James Keenan and Danny Carey.

* Tool was signed to the same label as Green Jellÿ, the now-defunct Zoo Entertainment.

* Tool's first EP had songs recorded live at the Green Jello loft(which is noted on the cd).

Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie

Pass the Dutchie was a UK number one single for three weeks in September 1982 for Musical Youth.

It was a cover version of the song "Pass the Kouchie" by The Mighty Diamonds, written by Leroy Sibbles and Jackie Mittoo. The term "dutchie" (a cooking pot) allowed for a more radio-friendly song than "kouchie" (a slang term for marijuana).

The song was first championed by DJ John Peel and became an instant hit when it was picked up by MCA records in September 1982. It debuted at #26 on the chart and rose to #1 the following week, one of a handful of records to have risen to the top spot from outside the top 20. The following year it reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the USA, eventually selling over 4 million copies worldwide.
